Bloomington police today confirmed the existence of a witness in the Lauren Spierer case who says she saw the Indiana University student at the corner of College Ave. and 10th St., as reported by TonyGatto.com six days ago.
Police, however, believe the witness is mistaken in insisting that the sighting was precisely at 3:38am. Captain Joe Qualters says it may have been as much as an hour earlier.
“What I’m here to tell you is that we have reviewed the video, not only the timeline that we have been using, … and where Lauren does in fact appear … she does appear in that video with someone that is already known to investigators. We have also reviewed it during the time period where it has been reported, essentially an hour later (at 3:38 a.m.), and we do not find any evidence that supports that information,” Qualters said.
The TonyGatto.com report, New Witness Tells Of Lauren Spierer Mystery Encounter With Unknown Man, was addressed at a police news briefing today, where it was revealed that the “unknown man” identified in the story is someone known to police. They did not say whether the man is known to Lauren. The witness described the man as dark-skinned, about 5 feet, nine inches, 160 pounds, defined facial bone-structure and pointed, thin, rounded sideburns. She says he was wearing a polo-style shirt. Police discounted the report of a “mystery man”, but did not say why it took six days for the clarification. Today’s comments by police were in answer to a TV reporter’s question on Monday about the witness.

Qualters was addressing a blog post on TonyGatto.com. It says a female local bar manager reported seeing a mystery man throw an inebriated Spierer over his shoulder at 10th and College at 3:38 a.m.
While Qualters said he had not spoken to this witness, he acknowledged the witness had been interviewed by police: “We had spoken with someone.” He said investigators “do not have any video evidence that supports what had been reported by that particular witness.” Witness accounts can be off, he said.
“I can’t say that she didn’t see Lauren,” Qualters continued. “It does not appear that she saw Lauren at the time that was reported by other sources.”
The witness, a local woman, agreed to be interviewed by TonyGatto.com saying she saw an extremely inebriated Lauren Spierer with a man at exactly 3:38 a.m on Friday, June 3. She says the two were on the steps at the corner of 10th St. and College Ave. and at one point the man slung Lauren over his shoulder.
The witness has been interviewed by the Bloomington police department and was called-back for a second meeting in which a police artist drew-up a sketch.
The witness was shown a photo lineup and she says none of the six or so photos, presumably Spierer’s friends who have been named persons of interest, matched the mystery man.
The witness has viewed a photo of Corey Rossman, the Indiana University student who was with Spierer at Kilroy’s Sports Bar and at both their apartments that night, and she says she does not believe Rossman is the man who she saw with Spierer that night.
“She was completely out of it,” the witness told TonyGatto.com, “I had just come off work so I was totally sober. The guy was like, can I take you home, and she couldn’t even answer.”

I do not understand why they are not revealing the identity of the individual with Lauren. Everyone knows about her being with Rossman, Rosenbaum, Beth and Rohn; so why are they holding back the identity of the individual with her in this video?
They are respecting his privacy. Police are generally discreet about publicly naming people unless there’s a good reason to do so.
@ Ashy. Sorry, perhaps I should have clarified my question. I think I posted on this somewhere else more clearly. I am referring to the witness Tony spoke with that states she saw Lauren with a man. If she was shown a line-up and didn’t see the individual then perhaps she could confirm it was the individual in the video. I don’t expect them to make the video public to the general population.
Furthermore, why is the witness you spoke to not able to view the video in order to “confirm” that it is the same individual?

Not an hour different – UP TO an hour different. For all we know, the sighting could have been at 3:37, not 3:38. Also, there aren’t any video cameras at 10th and college as far as I have heard, so what does it all mean? It seems to me that there is a specific reason that LE does not want to go into detail more about this in public, nor do they wish to ID the persons seen with LS publicly, other than those we already know. I am sure that others at least saw her in passing that night, if not hung out with the gang. they may have conflicting testimony that they are hoping will hang someone.

The time on the video may be wrong like on the video of the truck everyone was looking for. They obviously don’t know how to check the times before they present it as fact. Maybe she is right and they are wrong.

I have a better question WHERE ARE ALL THE HECKLERS that accused Tony Gatto of publishing false information? Apologies? Nah, of course not; heckling is much easier than humility.
My read on this and other things the BPD has said is that they suspect one or more of the friends. They are not releasing information about who she is seen on video with. The mother has asked friends to come forward with information several times – and I am sure the police and FBI encouraged her to do this. The FBI is said to be questioning all known acquaintances of the POIs. This all seems to point to the police suspecting friend/s. Right now none of us really has enough information to know which friend/s. It could be any of them. Lots of possibilities.
I would bet though that the police have video evidence that leads them to narrow it down. I wish that they would release it. Why would they be keeping the video to themselves? Just because of how it makes Lauren looks possibly, but why not say who she was with? I don’t understand that.
@Jon I believe you are right on for reasons that I probably shouldn’t publish here. But she is very committed in her public statements to directing comments towards those who “saw” or “know” something, as in “friends.” Did you read the article about a news photographer and reporter going to the house of Jesse Wolff? No one answered and then a minute later a porsche sped out and headed towards the photographer then swerved at the last minute? All of these POI’s are feeling pressure I’m sure.
I don’t blame them for not answering. I’m sure they have been told not to answer any questions, and to be on video saying, “No comment,” looks bad. I don’t expect any of the persons of interest to make any comments, really anyone that the police or FBI have questioned are going to be asked to keep their information private.
Fox59 News reported the following:
“Last week, one of Wolff’s roommates told Fox59 News he had not been interviewed by police but last saw wolff at 2:30 a.m., just a couple of hours before Spierer was reportedly last seen.”
Anything is possible after 2:30am. And why aren’t all roommates being interviewed???? I guess I just thought anyone associated with each POI would get a friendly visit from our neighborhood police!?

By saying “it”, to me, he is stating that there is no evidence *on that same video/camera* to support the 3:38 account. Well, duh, of course its not on there because the incident is reported at 10th and College, not in the alley.

i think she overdosed and the friends are just hiding how and when. scared for giving her too much of the c train.. it will come out as soon as they check all cars of all POIs. also, doesn’t the bar manager clock in and out? cameras in that bar…cant that be traced?
I’m guessing they can’t check the cars/apartments/etc of the POI who have lawyered up?

Has it been reported: If Rosenbaum/Wolff have had cars/apartments searched? Alibis for the boys from 2:30 am the night she went missing until she was reported missing the following day?

This makes me sick. I am confident that it was the boyfriend. I want to start sending him pictures of George Hughley (yeardley love killer) that say, “Welcome to your future!”
If I were her parents, I’d file a civil suit against Kilroy’s right now, and MAYBE try to do so against the “friends.” Not for the money, but to get the brats in to talk. The one against the bar could be a legitmate dram shop act, the one against the kids would be a weak civil suit. Doesn’t matter, just has to get past the motions to dismiss. Now, we have an opportunity to require these kids to come in and give sworn depositon testimony (either as party defendants or nonparty witnesses). If you don’t show up for a deposition, you’re held in contempt. If they just let the judgement go against them and default, you can get a body attachment that will bring them into jail.
If there’s more than 2 people lying, they probably wouldn’t be able to keep it together during deposition.
Lauren was at Kilroy’s for less than 45 minutes. My guess is she was hammered before she ever got there, so that is where you should be looking if you want to hold someone accountable.
Hey Netty where is that article on Jesse Wolff? id like to have a look at it. Earlier I got a reply from g. I dont know who g. is – but they said that Corey probably wouldn’t have known that he was trespassing at Smallwood. And I dont think most of those kids would have known that- most peope dont know whose off limits on property. So if Corey wouldn’t know probably lauren didnt know either; how would those other boys. Next question; they say there are 10 persons of interest- are the other 5 female or is that including the so called mystery person and or the guys who corey met up with on the 5th floor.
Next thought- These guys- including Jay Rosenbaum know to walk a girl home- so I cant help but feel he’s involved somehow in this crime-what an obvious excuse to make it seem she vanished! 1. I’m sure he was raised to be a gentleman. 2. To just say you told her to stay on your couch- but she insisted on walking home- so he said if you stumble I’m not letting you go- 3. If she insists on leaving you walk her! 4. You know she doesnt even have a cell if she gets into trouble- (after all he says she called Rohn to see if he had her cell) so you get off your arse and walk her! Thats why I believe he’s lying! Im sure if you asked his mom had she not heard his lame excuse that he watched her round the corner at 4:15- she would have insisted that he’s the kind of boy to walk her home.

I think they should check the areas in the country the former administrater said the fraternity these boys were in would drop off for hazing for them to find their way back.
I also wondered Lauren that she didnt share with her friends that she had QT syndorme-at this point we dont know if lauren was unknowingly drugged or did them herself- which ever one of these scenerios put her in this compramising condition that may have led to her death.Had they known about it and IF it was an accident maybe they wouldnt have panicked and G-d knows what…
He was likely too wasted to know what time Lauren left or to be able to stop her or say much of anything. That he even stepped up and reported she was with him and he saw her off was more than anyone else that was in those apartments have done. They weren’t just watching TV and drinking milk and eating cookies that night, which is why no one is coming forward.
Though the young man who got in the altercation may not have known, nor did Lauren, that he was no longer allowed in the building, those guys who got into the “fight’ with him probably did because they may have been the ones responsible for getting him on the list.
None of these kids are going to win any Good Citizenship awards. They drink illegally to excess, they haze, they get into trouble, are banned from apartments, get into fights and take drugs.
I think there are a number of kids who were with Lauren who are now under cover. The ones who have reported to the police have been rewarded by having their names spread out in the media and getting all kinds of grief and speculation. No wonder the others are not stepping up seeing the reward the one who did got, along with the others implicated. I don’t think any of those names should have been released, and that is probably why the video picture of the young man is not being released.

Funny how he wasn’t too wasted to remember she used his phone at 4:15 to call DR and not too wasted to tell her to stay on his couch and when she insisted on leaving he wasnt too wasted to tell her if she stumbled, he was going to make her stay. And finnally not too wasted to watch her round the corner SAFELY and remember that she left at 4:30! What kind of excuses are you making? And Smallwood isn’t some tiny shack- it’s a large apartment complex these guys they ran into arent standing around monitoring Corey Rossmans comings and goings to have seen him urinating in the garage- im sure they didnt know he wasnt allowed on the premeses- i’ll bet none of those residents know. Its not on a sign outside! And I presume the video may show how inebriated lauren was so they are not showing it for those reasons.

The two young men who stayed in Bloomington have had everything searched and were questioned, gave DNA, were polygraphed and their attorneys and parents as well as they felt that they were so absolved from whatever happened to Lauren that they continued on with their classes, driving their cars, living in their apartments. It seems to me that the police are satisfied that Lauren left them alive. Who did she visit next in that 5 North complex is what is in question. Other than the young man who said he saw her off and that she used his phone to call a friend before leaving, there are no other people who have come up. I suspect that the young man who has reported he saw Lauren at 4:30PM is the only one who has stepped up with the info. I don’t think he is the only one Lauren visited in that complex, and my guess is that Charlene Spierer knows this and is very disappointed that none of those “friends” have stepped up and admitted that they were together after Lauren left her injured friend with his roommate. No way that the sole young man was the only one in her company after that, and he is the only one, and getting bad press, he is, that reported being with her.

DR’s Facebook postings during this massive search effort for Lauren are disturbing. How do we know DR was in his apartment that night when his phone rang? I know he didn’t answer, but how do they know he wasn’t out all night, no in and out video footage because he slept over at someone’s apartment or something.
Doesn’t Rohn live at Smallwood? LOTS of cameras. Should be easy to prove if he stayed at his place that night. And when he was there.

COMMENTS: As for Wolff, PIX 11 went to the family home this evening in Port Washington. No one answered. However, no more than a minute later a Porsche blasted out of a compact garage and sped towards a PIX11 photographer. The male driver steered toward the photographer before swerving at the last second.

Tthank-you Netty for the link-Wow, mounting rage! Heading your car towards a reporter or anyone! I know everyone handles stress differently- but this was pretty early into the investigation. I understand the hiring of attorneys, but if a friend or someone you love goes missing – If your innocent you do everything you can and its a well known fact that police try to eliminate through investigation techniques the people closest to the victim. But you sure look guilty if the only person your worried about is yourself.
This is so sad, I wish these kids if they are involved think long and hard. What if this was their sister, their brother, their daughter or their son. I believe if you run from your life lessons they only get harder. For some reason this lesson has gone viral and we are all here to learn from it.
If reporters came knocking on my door and my son was dealing with this I would not be too happy. Wouldn’t pull out the Porsche (I don’t have), but give the courtesy of a phone call!
So what. They don’t want to talk to the reporter. None of the persons of interest should be talking to reporters. The problem is not those guys. They have all talked to the police. There are a bunch of “friends” out there whose names have not even been mentioned who are lying low. The boyfriend has spoken to the police, was the one who reported Lauren missing, given his information. Though, yes, he could be implicated, for right now, he is not one of the ones who have not given information.
There should be a public call for EVERYONE who was there in that area to come to the search center and answer some questions about what they remember of that morning.
I doubt Lauren is anywhere in that area. The search is 3 weeks old, dogs have sniffed the place out Whatever happened, she was moved elsewhere. But the last known people to see her or have the possibility of seeing her were the kids in the 5 West cluster where she went after dropping off her injured friend.. Even if she did leave that group on foot, they should all come and own up to being there. That any have not have really strung the one guy out to dry.
Has anyone ever thought that possibly someone in LE may be behind her disappearance ? I live in Chicago and we had a couple cops who would stroll around the city (off duty too) in their unmarked cars looking to take advantage of extremely drunk young women. Instead of all of these people who don’t really know Lauren and certainly have no idea what happened that fateful morning, showing up to search for her, it would be more helpful if every single student who lives in the 5 North Complex and really anyone who was in the area at that time report to the Search center and answer questions even in they have no idea what happened that night. Maybe whatever they have to say will be a piece to the puzzle–like they saw X walking down the street, or Y went out, even if X and Y seem to have no connection to Lauren.
I truly do not believe that the young man who reported he saw Lauren off was the only one with her before she left. .

I going back to my theory that her boyfriend went looking for her after she did not show up when she was suppose to, and with the possibility that his friend told him he seen Lauren with Rossman at her apt building. When he found her at 4:30 in the morning walking around all messed up without her shoes, they got into a fight and he accidentally killed her, suspecting her of being unfaithful. Rosenbaum is just worried about drugs and being associated with them and Lauren’s disappearance since he knows nothing. LE prob has Wolff on video somewhere but wanted to clear the suspicious truck first. They are saving the video information until they get the chance to question him…when he says he didn’t leave his Apt they will spring the video on him and catch him in a lie…if they get the chance. The question now becomes, how and where did he hide her body??
I’ll bet he is home now sweating it out, paranoid and staying in the house.

This is the only place I will come for news on this story anymore. You tell it like it is, even if it is not what people want to hear. I had been checking twitter and @NewsOnLaurenS, but all of their tweets to celebrities rub me the wrong way. They seemed just as concerned about getting Justin Bieber to retweet something as they do about actually helping. I get that many more people will see a Bieber tweet, but it is def not necessary.
not one person has mentioned day light savings time stamps on the cameras. they do not manually change. the camera could read an hour earlier. so when at 3:38 on camera could have actually been 4:30ish am give or take a few.
we don’t know the reasons the BPD are neglecting to inform the press with their information. This is a crisis for all parties involved and many images are on the line. Drug, students, and crime do not bode well for the economic oiled machine we call college. the family might be concious of the details shared to the public, as well as the Jewish community of IU. while we think the BPD have mishandled or botched this from the start, their record doesn’t speak to well. The crime statistics in Bloomington especially for rape have sky rocketed in the past three years. Praying for Lauren and her family that they receive the answers the need.

When I was at IU 15 years ago, AEP was known as a house that did a lot drugs. No other house had a bigger reputation for drugs than AEP.
Is it not possible that the police have their times mixed up? This woman seems like a credible witness….Wasn’t their a glitch in the camera that showed the truck? Making it look like it circled the block twice when in fact it was only once? Maybe this woman is the only one telling the truth….i.e. kids all agreed on the same time line/story in advance?
Wow. That would be crazy. I suppose it’s possible. They seem to have messed-up on the timing and info of the truck. Also, if you look at the direct quote of Qualters on this it is very confusing, he talks about a video that is not from that location, because we’re pretty sure there is no camera there. Then he talks about the timeframe not matching up — saying what the witness saw happened an hour earlier, which puts it at 2:38 close to otheir 2:51 timeline. This woman told me she was absolutely sure it was 3:38. I don’t think she’s lying and it seems that police think she’s pretty credible because they’ve met her twice and are talking about her to the press. In defense of the police, witnesses get stuff wrong all the time.
Indiana only recently went to day light savings time and people mess up times and their clocks all over the state. I think it is very plausible a clock is off and that these times line up. Unless you have a situation like this, they probably don’t even care if camera times are right at a business.
To me, the account of a sober person locking up a bar and leaving beats any camera time. As we have seen already. Qualters also said that all persons on video are known to them – so there would have been no reason to release a sketch based on the witness in order to solicit public help if, indeed the this incident was recorded somehow.
My only problem with this witness is how sure they were that it was Lauren. There are literally dozens of petite blond drunk girls at those bars on any given weekend night.

That’s how understood it from the last press conference. No mystery man – everyone is known to police. It was never denied that what the witness had reported was wrong – it was only said that they could not verify the time.
And AH – there really aren’t THAT many petite blonde drunks stumbling around town on a Thursday (?) night. The witness’ account is further credible because a 90 pound female may be hoisted over the shoulder, not so when the weight increases.
Would like to know more about the events of the day after (unlikely to happen, I know). Seems a bit odd that LS would be thought to be “missing” (as in seriously missing) just because she wasn’t in her apartment when bf went looking for her. At that point, no one knew (acc to their reports) that she hadn’t come home. She could’ve come home, gotten up when roomie was gone, made bed, then left. Under normal conditions, I wouldn’t assume anything so serious until checking with friends first. Perhaps that’s what JW was doing when he went to CR/MB apt on Friday. Also possible that the missing cellphone at Kilroy’s was unusual enough for Lauren that it raised an alarm for those who knew her best. Also possible that the friends’ verbal reports to her bf of her state might have made him jump into action. Isn’t there a 24 hour “waiting period” for missing persons?

I think the idea that LS was “cheating” is a big assumption. Just because she was out drinking with CR (and acc to the one TG story, she wasn’t even drinking with him–what happened with that story, btw?) or walking with him, doesn’t mean she was involved with him. She has a lot of male friends; no one is suggesting she was “cheating” with DR when she went with him to the JR apartment at 12:30. That doesn’t mean that JW might not be jealous.
Also, the police didn’t discredit the witness. Qualters said that the person identified was not a mystery man but someone known to them. There WAS a man but his identity is not a mystery to them.

Were they having relationship problems? The fraternity connection between he and JR and the fact that LS was out with “another guy” just leaves one to wonder. She’s young, adorable and in college; and she just met a new guy CR at the Indy 500 (a bad boy personality). Young girls are often wooed by that type. That and the fact that her boyfriend’s friends are in a confrontation with him the night she goes missing… and JW and JR are first to head out of town. Wow, just too many coincidences.
Glad we aren’t incarcerated based on what if’s. The world would be in absolute pandemonium.
I believe a great injustice was done to this case from the beginning. The BPD listened to the kids accounts of the evening and did not get video surveillance fast enough. Now most if not all of the main persons of interest are gone. With their cars, clothes, shoes, apartments and houses cleaned out. It sounds like they are finally going back to square 1, the original accounts and the people closest to her that night. They keep saying they have everyone on their video so what are they waiting for? I hate to think they are waiting for a body so they will have evidence. Thats what the people responsible are waiting for- to see if they can get away with it. But how do you live with that for the rest of your life? It will change you forever-how can you go on, be a productive individual live a life of love and family one day? I’m sure it must lead to a life of self destruction, out of self loathing. Sometimes you have to take a look at what your here for. Maybe your mission in this life school is honesty. Honesty and responsibility. And those in YOUR life learn from how you handle a situation like this. You can have a ripple effect on the world around you. To many parents today misdirect their kids by saving them from learning lifes lessons. But if you dont learn your lesson your lesson gets harder and more difficult. So parents help your kids by teaching them to be honest when it counts. Lets make this a better world. And most importantly bring Laurens parents peace. Encourage your kids to be honest and responsible. This whole viral caring community will learn from your actions.
Here are a few questions i feel need answered:
What was her relationship with her boyfriend that night? If I’m less than two weeks from moving home and away from him/her, I’m most likely hanging out with the girl i’ve been with for 2 years or at least be talking to them with that short amount of time to hang out. My girlfriend would be hunting me down if I didn’t answer the phone all night (I realize they may have lived close to each other but not same town)
If JW and JR are frat brothers and she’s out with CR, wouldn’t JR be pissed to see her w/ someone else than her boyfriend, aka CR?
Another thing that bothers me is her leaving her shoes and phone at the bar. I’m sorry but I could be hammered but when I walk out onto the sidewalk and realize I’m barefoot I would immediately realize I don’t have shoes on and probably at that point also realize I don’t have my phone. Something doesn’t add up.
Her purse on the ledge? That doesn’t suggest to me that she was taken by someone. If you’re grabbed you’re purse isn’t going to end up neatly on the ledge of a building, it’s probably going to be randomly strewn across the ground somewhere.
A lot of things don’t add up at this point but hopefully answer will come soon and bring peace to her family.
I thought I read somewhere that someone named Amin actually found the purse/key lying on the ground and placed in on the railing. There have been SO many articles, so I am not sure where I read it…

Well–I don’t see any “friend relationships” for ZO or the guy in the picture with any of the POI that LE have named. On another note, this morning’s HT article on the streets of Bloomington in the area Lauren was last seen explains that bars shut off drinks at 3:00 and customers are out by 3:15, with bar workers cleaning up and closed by 3:30–which places the bar manager on her way from work squarely in the 3:38 AM range, as she reported.
